Newswise — Ben Meadows Company, a distributor of professional equipment and supplies and Brunton Inc., a compass manufacturer and camping/outdoors outfitter, will donate a portion of catalog sales to the upcoming SOILS: Worlds Underfoot Exhibit at the Smithsonian Natural History Museum. When consumers purchase any Brunton products from Ben Meadows through Dec. 31, 2006, a portion of the sales will be donated to the Smithsonian Soils Exhibit.

"It's the kind of project we look for. A real educational step for our company that ties directly to our product lines," says John Smithbaker, Brunton's President and CEO. "We're excited to collaborate with Ben Meadows and the Soil Science Society of America on this opportunity to help fund a unique exhibit at one of the most prestigious museums in the world, emphasizing the vital role soil plays in our lives and the critical importance of stewardship and sustainability of the earth."

The Soil Science Society of America (SSSA), Madison, WI is working with the Smithsonian Institution to develop the 5,000-square-foot Soils Exhibit at the National Museum of Natural History in Washington DC.

"With the help of donors like Brunton and Ben Meadows, the joint exhibition project will open its doors in 2008 to the story of soil for more than 6 million visitors a year and occupy one entire hall of the most visited natural history museum in the world," explains SSSA President Mary Collins, University of Florida. "It will bring together scientific research in many fields and the Smithsonian's educational outreach capabilities in a wide-reaching public programming effort."

Along with soil monoliths from every state, hands-on educational, interactive sections and related publications, web activities, and a traveling exhibit are also being planned. The Soils Exhibit is being developed as part of the museum's Forces of Change outreach program, which explores the forces that shape and sustain the world we live in.
