Newswise — New social media guidelines, sickle cell research, obesity in adolescents and young adults, palliative care and issues related to chemotherapy treatment take center stage this week when the nation’s pediatric hematology/oncology nurses meet October 14-16, 2010 in Minneapolis, MN.

More than 800 pediatric hematology/oncology nurses are expected to gather at the Association of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Nurses (APHON) 34th Annual Convention and Exhibit. Participants will learn about the latest in pediatric hematology/oncology nursing practice, build new skills, and connect with other nurses in the field. In addition, for the first time, APHON is partnering with the Children’s Oncology Group (COG), which will present an additional educational track, adding a unique clinical component to this year’s conference.

“This year’s conference theme, Coming Together: Different Experiences, One Commitment, underscores the diversity of APHON members’ backgrounds, roles, and settings, as well as the historic addition of a COG preconference session and educational track. This is an amazing opportunity to come together and access the best of both APHON and COG education in one location,” said APHON President, Deborah Echtenkamp MSN RN CPON®.

APHON is comprised of more than 3200 pediatric hematology/oncology nurses who share a vision for a future without cancer and blood diseases. Together APHON nurses are committed to defining best practices for optimal patient care, passionate about providing the highest standards of care, and dedicated to advancing the field of pediatric hematology/oncology nursing.
