Over the past few years, millions of dollars have been spent by consumers on "natural music" says UAB music professor Jeff Reynolds, D.M.A. "This natural music, which combines instruments such as guitars and harps with the natural sounds of whales, birds and the ocean, is used in large public areas like airports to act as a calming agent."

The recognition of music's calming effects is nothing new. According to Reynolds, in the 17th century, philosophers and scientists called this the Doctrine of Affections, and even went so far as to identify how different tempos, keys, melodies and instruments could be combined to make the listener feel or think differently.
