SOURCE ON CABLE TV AFTER DEREGULATION

David Bohmer does not expect see the same level of price increases that followed the 1987 deregulation of the cable industry. "There was a franchising issue involved, which is not the case today. More importantly is that in today's market there is greater competition, or the threat of it, from sources such as satellite direct-TV," he says.

Bohmer, director of the Center of Contemporary Media at DePauw University in Greencastle, Ind., previously had a 17-year career with Centel Corporation, a diversified telecommunications company with 1992 sales of more than $1 billion. Bohmer was senior vice president for government relations from 1989 to 1992 and president of Centel Cable Television Company from 1986 to 1989. He has held numerous positions in the cable and telephone businesses. In 1993 he helped found the National Association of Grass Roots Programs, a not-for-profit organization intended to promote greater participation in the public policy process.

The Center for Contemporary Media schedules well-known national journalists and other national media figures to speak throughout the year. On May 6 it will host a panel discussion at DePauw University on the history and impact of cable television. Panelists include the founders of ESPN and C-Span. Bohmer also directs the DePauw's Media Fellows Program, an honors and internship program for students who plan careers in the media and communications-related areas.
