Newswise — David A. Deese, associate professor of political science at Boston College and an expert on the politics of international economic relations, will be available for comment throughout the Sixth WTO Ministerial Conference to be held in Hong Kong, China, December 13"18, 2005.

Deese attended the most recent WTO Ministerial in Cancun, Mexico in 2003, where he interviewed a wide range of senior trade officials and representatives of non-governmental and public international organizations.

Two prior Ministerials in Seattle (1999) and Cancun (2003) were beset by disagreements. This sixth conference will be vital for advancing the four-year-old round of international trade negotiations (resulting from the 2001 Ministerial Conference in Doha, Qatar) sufficiently to conclude the final agreement in 2006.

"Government officials and public groups worldwide will be tracking this WTO Ministerial gathering to decide if the Doha Round can deliver results of fundamental importance to the global trading system," said Deese.

Prof. Deese specializes in the politics of decision-making and US-EU and small group leadership in the GATT-WTO, as well as international bargaining and negotiations more generally. His degrees include a B.A. from Dartmouth College, and M.A., M.A.L.D. and Ph.D. from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy.

His forthcoming book is "Principles and Power: The US, Europe, and the Global Trade System", while his edited book, "The New Politics of American Foreign Policy," remains a leading text in this area. His next book assesses the monitoring and enforcement of international treaty systems in trade and environmental protection.
