Newswise — President Bush's State of the Union Address on Tuesday, Jan. 31, reportedly will address the issue of economic competitiveness and include proposals to promote innovation and preserve U.S. leadership in science and technology.

Johns Hopkins University President William R. Brody can provide comment and perspective on these proposals.

Brody has spoken and written widely on the "calculus of innovation" and what the United States must do, in areas as diverse as research funding, science and technology education, and immigration policy, to remain competitive in the world economy. He is co-chair, with Intel Corp. Chairman Craig R. Barrett, of the National Innovation Initiative Leadership Council. They have been working in Washington and around the country to move the innovation/competitiveness issue higher on the national agenda.
