WASHINGTON, July 15 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Following is a statement by American Federation of Teachers President Sandra Feldman on the Patients' Bill of Rights:

"With their votes on the Patient's Bill of Rights, the Senate has missed a real opportunity to improve the quality healthcare for all Americans. The AFT is particularly disappointed that the majority of Senate Republicans refused to support sensible legislation protecting the right of nurses and other healthcare professionals to blow the whistle on unsafe practices and procedures. We will continue to push for the enactment of a Patients' Bill of Rights that provides sick Americans with the real protection they need.

In addition to 53,000 nurses and other healthcare professionals, the AFT represents 1 million teachers, school support staff, higher education faculty and state and local government employees.
