CLEVELAND CLINIC EYE RESEARCHERS RECEIVE $1.5 MILLION GRANT TO STUDY CAUSES AND PREVENTION OF RETINAL DEGENERATION

The Foundation Fighting Blindness, Inc. has awarded researchers from the Cleveland Clinic's Cole Eye Institute and Lerner Research Institute $1.5 million over five years for the study of retinal degeneration.

"The award will be used to fund a series of five projects related to the causes and prevention of inherited retinal disease, including age-related macular degeneration," said Joe Hollyfield, Ph.D., director of research in the Cleveland Clinic's division of ophthalmology. The grant will support research being conducted by Dr. Hollyfield and colleagues John Crabb, Ph.D., Bela Anande-Apte, Ph.D., and Elias Traboulsi, M.D.

The Foundation Fighting Blindness (FFB), based in Hunt Valley, Md., supports research directed at finding the cause, treatment and cure of inherited retinal disorders. The chairman and founder of the FFB is Gordon Gund, who is also chairman and owner of the NBA's Cleveland Cavaliers.

The Cleveland Clinic Foundation, founded in 1921, integrates clinical and hospital care with research and education in a private, non-profit group practice. At the Cleveland Clinic and Cleveland Clinic Florida in 1998, nearly 1,000 full-time salaried physicians representing more than 100 medical specialities and subspecialties provided for 1,735,484 outpatient visits and 49,893 hospital admissions for patients from throughout the United States and more than 80 countries. In 1997, The Cleveland Clinic Health System was formed. It now comprises The Cleveland Clinic Foundation, the Ashtabula County Medical Center, Health Hill Hospital for Children, Euclid, Fairview, Hillcrest, Huron, Lakewood, Lutheran, Marymount and South Pointe hospitals. With 2,957 staffed beds, the Cleveland Clinic Health System offers broad geographic coverage, a full continuum of care, improved quality and lower cost of care to Northeast Ohio residents.
