Newswise — PARK RIDGE, ILLINOIS –In two major communications initiatives designed to help nurse anesthetists stay abreast of the latest developments in anesthesia safety, practice, business, and to encourage online peer interaction about best practices and other topics, the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA) rolled out its new Practice Management Initiative and online communities for members on Nov. 6, 2015, at its annual Fall Leadership Academy in Rosemont, Ill.

The AANA is the professional association representing more than 49,000 Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) and student registered nurse anesthetists, anesthesia experts who are the hands-on providers of approximately 40 million anesthetics to patients across the United States each year. Ninety percent of the nation’s nurse anesthetists are members of the AANA.

AANA’s new Practice Management Initiative is dedicated to developing business of anesthesia and pain management resources and making them available in one convenient location on the AANA website (www.aana.com/practicemanagement) for AANA members and other stakeholders to access, use, supplement, and improve. Areas of focus include business of anesthesia, employment, quality and reimbursement, facility accreditation, and professional practice, among other topics. Content will be added on a regular basis.

“By developing, enhancing, and consolidating essential practice-related resources, CRNAs and other healthcare professionals will be more prepared than ever to offer the best anesthesia care and services possible to their patients,” said AANA President Juan Quintana, CRNA, DNP, MHS. In a companion initiative, the AANA also introduced AANA Connect, which takes advantage of a robust digital platform developed by Virginia-based Higher Logic to provide robust online communities where the association’s CRNA and student members can engage in dialogue on matters important to the profession and to their patients. Among the first three communities to be rolled out is one devoted to Practice Management topics; the other two communities are for the general membership and student members.

“We believe that patient safety is enhanced when providers share their expertise and experience through the efficiency and convenience of online communication,” said Quintana. “AANA Connect will enable our members to do this in a safe, user-friendly environment.”

AANA Connect also features an app available through the Apple and Google stores.

About the American Association of Nurse AnesthetistsFounded in 1931 and located in Park Ridge, Ill., the AANA is the professional organization for more than 49,000 nurse anesthetists across the United States. As anesthesia specialists, Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) safely provide approximately 40 million anesthetics to patients each year for surgical, obstetrical, pain management, and trauma stabilization services. CRNAs deliver essential healthcare in thousands of communities and are able to prevent gaps in access to anesthesia services, especially in rural, inner-city, and other medically underserved areas of the country. They are highly valued in today’s healthcare environment because they deliver the same safe, high-quality anesthesia care as other anesthesia professionals but at a lower cost, helping to control rising healthcare costs.
