Newswise — The NSF EPSCoR CPU2AL program is sponsoring the Alabama Plasma Internship Program (ALPIP), a 10-week summer internship program for undergraduate students enrolled at institutions across the Southeastern U.S. (Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico).

The first week of the program takes place in New Jersey at the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL) and consists of an intensive training activity involving lectures, laboratory experiments, and short classes in plasma science. For the remainder of the program, ALPIP interns will conduct research on a summer project at a CPU2AL partner institution located in Alabama.

Benefits include:

  • Ten-week stipend of $5500
  • Paid on-campus housing during the nine weeks in Alabama
  • Travel allowance of up to $700 for roundtrip transportation costs from/to the student home institution to/from the Alabama host institution
  • Paid transportation and housing costs for the first-week trip to PPPL
  • Travel allowance of $2000 to present the internship results at a conference after the internship

The ultimate goal of the program is to promote long-term relationships between students in the Southeastern U.S. and investigators in Alabama.
