Newswise — When the hottest company on the planet makes a bold new move, others take notice. In June, Google installed 1.6 megawatts' worth of solar panels on the roofs of buildings at its campus in Mountain View, Calif.--the largest photovoltaic installation in North America by far. It's enough to cover 30 percent of those buildings' electrical demand. Although that's barely a blip in terms of the company's, and its hungry data centers', energy needs, the search giant's record-setting installation may be a sign that this is solar power's time to shine in the United States.

Google is but one of a number of large corporations that are embracing solar power. In the October 2007 issue, IEEE Spectrum considers how Google's bold investment might indicate that solar panels have finally found their logical home, snugly blanketing the roofs of green-thinking businesses.
