Newswise — The Department of Surgery at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital (TJUH) and Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University recently welcomed five new surgeons to its ranks:

Nicholas Cavarocchi, M.D.Associate Professor, Cardiothoracic SurgeryDr. Cavarocchi received his medical degree from Temple University School of Medicine in 1978. He earned a bachelor of science degree in Science from Villanova University in 1974. His medical training began at Temple University Hospital as an intern in Surgery (1978-79); he followed this with a residency in Surgery (1979-83); and finished as chief resident in Surgery (1982-83). Dr. Cavarocchi left Temple for the Mayo Clinic to complete a residency in Cardiothoracic Surgery from 1983-85. He also served as chief resident in Cardiothoracic Surgery there from 1984-85. In 1985, he was named the Cardiothoracic Resident of the Year. After the Mayo Clinic he headed to England’s Papworth Hospital where he completed a residency in Transplantation from 1985-86.

Dr. Cavarocchi has been the catalyst for starting several heart and lung transplant programs at notable hospitals including Temple University Hospital (1986) and Wayne State University (1990). Before joining Jefferson, he was an associate professor of Surgery and Medicine at the Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center. There he helped start the Heart and Vascular Intensive Care Unit Model in 2006.

Dr. Cavarocchi is certified by the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Thoracic Surgery. He is also an approved transplant surgeon by the United Network of Organ Sharing (UNOS). He is a member of many national organizations including the American Medical Association, American Trauma Society and the Society of Thoracic Surgeons; and serves on a subcommittee for UNOS. Locally, Dr. Cavarocchi is a member of the Pennsylvania Medical Society, Delaware Valley Transplant Society and the Philadelphia County Medical Society. He has an extensive list of published research in leading medical journals such as Heart Transplantation, Surgery and Transplant Proceedings; and is a reviewer for Annals of Thoracic Surgery, Journal of Heart-Lung Transplantation and Chest.

Alec Beekley, M.D.Associate Professor, Acute Care SurgeryDr. Beekley holds the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the Medical Corps of the United States Army. He received his medical degree from Case Western University School of Medicine in 1996. He earned his bachelor of science degree in Life Sciences from the United States Military Academy in 1992. He completed both an internship (1996-97) and residency (1997-2001) in General Surgery at Madigan Army Medical Center.

Before joining Jefferson, Dr. Beekley was an assistant professor of Surgery at Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences; and a clinical assistant professor of Surgery at the University of Washington.

Dr. Beekley is certified by the American Board of Surgery. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and is a member of the American Society of Bariatric and Metabolic Surgeons. His honors and awards include a Combat Medical Badge, the Bronze Star, four Army Commendation Medals, two National Defense Service Medals, two Army Achievement Medals, an Iraq Campaign Medal and an Afghanistan Campaign Medal. Dr. Beekley has an extensive list of published research in leading medical journals such as Trauma, American Journal of Surgery and Surgery for Obesity and Related Diseases.

Stacey Milan, M.D.Assistant Professor, General SurgeryDr. Milan received her medical degree from Temple University School of Medicine in 2004. She earned a bachelor of science degree in Biology from Villanova University in 2000. Just prior to joining Jefferson, Dr. Milan completed a fellowship in Endocrine Surgery at Yale University School of Medicine. Her General Surgery training includes three years at The University of Cincinnati Medical Center; and her final two years at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital where she served as Chief Resident.

Dr. Milan is certified by the American Board of Surgery and is a member of The American College of Surgeons, Pennsylvania Medical Society, Association of Women’s Surgeons and the Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons.

Atul Rao, M.D.Assistant Professor, Vascular/Endovascular SurgeryDr. Rao received his medical degree from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey in 2001. He received his undergraduate degree in Molecular Biology from Princeton University in 1997. Dr. Rao was a surgical resident at TJUH from 2001-2008. From 2004-06, he also was a research fellow in the Department of Thoracic Surgery at the University of Pennsylvania’s Presbyterian Hospital. He served as Chief Resident at TJUH for a year from 2007-08. After completing his general surgery residency, he went on to complete a two year fellowship in Vascular and Endovascular Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.

Dr. Rao is certified by the American Board of Surgery. He is a member of Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society and is a candidate member of the Society for Vascular Surgery.

George Koenig Jr., D.O.Assistant Professor, Acute Care SurgeryDr. Koenig received his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2003; he also received a Master of science degree in Biomedical Sciences from there in 1999. Dr. Koenig earned a bachelor of arts degree in Biology and Chemistry from Bucknell University in 1996. He completed his residency in Surgery at Mercy Catholic Medical Center in Darby, Pennsylvania in 2008. This was followed by the completion of two fellowships at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. The first in Surgical Critical Care Medicine was completed in 2009; and the second in Acute Care Surgery was completed in 2010. Dr. Koenig received the American Medical Association Foundation Leadership Award in 2001. He also was awarded the Outstanding Faculty Award from The Johns Hopkins University Department of Emergency Medicine in 2010.
