The Opera Generation
Opera is experiencing a resurgence of sorts thanks to a new and younger audience, says Rachel Mathes, D.M.A., director of the UAB Opera Program.
"If you are looking for entertainment that defies authority, destroys property and has romance, opera has it all. The popularity of opera is growing with younger audiences because it combines vocal and instrumental music, dance, acting, costumes and set design all in one unique artistic experience."
According to Mathes, one reason opera is becoming more accessible is the use of sub- or sur-titles, which explain the plot of a production in English. In addition, opera producers and performers have become much more savvy in reaching the general audience through marketing.
