As part of its 150th anniversary, the University of Michigan Medical School will host a symposium to discuss the state of graduate medical education, from residency to specialized scientific training.

The event, to be held March 30 through April 1 of 2000, will examine service, business and education in concert and conflict in U.S. teaching hospitals. Titled "The Other Half of Medical Education: A Critical Look at Graduate Education," it will be held at the Towsley Center for Continuing Medical Education on the U-M campus.

The University of Michigan Medical School celebrates its sesquicentennial as one of the top-ranked medical schools in the nation. It was the first medical school in the U.S. to own and operate its own hospital, among the first major medical schools to admit women and the first major medical school to base its instruction on science. The UM Medical School was also a pioneer in the introduction of the modern medical curriculum and the development of the clinical clerkships as part of medical student education.

The UM Medical School continues its long tradition of excellence with a diverse and outstanding student body, world renowned basic science and clinical faculty, a completely revised curriculum for the M.D. degree, and exceptional facilities for patient care, education and research.
