Razor blade packages that send coded information to a scanner, cellphones that can automatically and accurately place you on a map, systems that can keep track of the whereabouts of every person in a building within centimeters--these sound like technologies of the future, but they are here today.

In its July cover story, IEEE Spectrum looks at these new location technologies, including RF-ID, E911, and ultrawideband. It explains the way they work and discusses their applications, both now and in the future. Spectrum also considers how such technologies can make life safer while simultaneously threatening individual privacy.
