Newswise — Orthopaedic surgeon Thomas C. Barber, MD, was elected Chair of the Board of Councilors (BOC) of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) at the 2009 Annual Meeting at the Venetian Sands Expo Center in Las Vegas. He will also serve on the Academy's Board of Directors.
The BOC represents the grassroots of the orthopaedic profession and explores health policy, education, research, advocacy and communications functions within the Academy. Its 100 plus members are elected by state orthopaedic societies. This group serves as an advisory body to the AAOS Board of Directors and as a resource to Academy committees. In addition, the BOC manages Academy's relations with the state orthopaedic societies.
"I have been a part of the BOC for several years now and am challenged and excited about my new role as Chair," stated Dr. Barber. "It is a privilege to serve in this capacity and play such an integral role in advancing the orthopaedic profession."
Currently, Dr. Barber is an orthopaedic surgeon specializing in total joint replacement at Kaiser Permanente in Oakland, California. He is also Associate Physician in Chief at Kaiser Oakland Medical Center. After earning his economics degree from Harvard, Dr. Barber attended the University of Rochester School of Medicine. He then completed his internship at Strong Memorial Hospital, residency at Boston University Medical Center and fellowship at Stanford University Hospital.
Dr. Barber has been actively engaged with the Academy for several years. He has served on the Health Care Delivery Committee, the Prevention of Medical Errors Committee and currently sits on the American Joint Replacement Registry Hospital/PI Recruitment and Relations Subcommittee. In 2008, Dr. Barber received the Kaiser Permanente Vohs Quality Award for his work on Kaiser's Total Joint Registry Project.
He and his wife currently reside in the San Francisco Bay Area and when not in surgery or volunteering, Dr. Barber enjoys spending time with his four children.
