Arthur Wheaton, automotive industry expert and industry specialist at Cornell University’s ILR School, comments about Toyota’s recapture of the title of No. 1 automaker in the world.

Wheaton says:

“Toyota has recaptured the title of number-one global automaker in sales. While this comes as little surprise, it is an important marketing advantage.

“Sales in Japan fully recovered from devastating natural and nuclear disasters in 2011. Sales in the U.S. were robust with new models boosting sales as sales in China cooled from an island ownership dispute.

“Overall, Toyota is well positioned to keep the sales title for 2013 but the race should tighten with GM and Volkswagen.”
