TRADING ROOM BRINGS GLOBAL MARKETS TO CAMPUS

UNIVERSITY PARK, PA-Students in Penn State's Smeal College of Business can now experience the turbulent world of global trading in its new Trading Room, which is believed to be the most technologically advanced room of its kind in the country.

"The Trading Room is a bridge between the classroom and the financial markets, and will give students live experience with global trading and risk management, exposure that prepares them from day one for careers in the global marketplace," says Judy Olian, Dean of Smeal College.

Using simulated trades, the Trading Room functions as a classroom as well as a research facility and will give students access to the standard Wall Street data: live coverage of financial markets from CNBC and CNNfn and data feeds from Reuters Xtra, Bloomberg, Bridge, Firstcall and Datastream. Computer stations also in the second-floor room will allow students to trade using simulated real-time information.

Smeal College is officially opening the Trading Room at a 1:30 p.m. ceremony on April 20. Only a handful of other business colleges around the country, including Wake Forest, Carnegie Mellon, MIT, and Cornell, have trading rooms.

"The learning that will take place in this facility will further strengthen the research and knowledge capabilities of our students and make them even more attractive employees to the major firms that recruit our graduates," says J. Randall Woolridge, The Goldman Sachs & Co. and Frank P. Smeal Endowed University Fellow and director of the Trading Room.

Students will practice the art and science of financial risk management in the 1,520-square-foot facility in the Business Administration Building. There will be three display boards running stock quotations and other data on a continuous feed in the Trading Room, as well as nearly 44 trading stations. These stations will be equipped as a trading desk would be in a Wall Street firm -with computer screens providing data feeds from multiple sources. There is also a multipurpose lab, a systems office, and a student lounge area.

J. David Rogers, Managing Director/Equities Trading at Goldman Sachs & Co. in New York City and a graduate of Penn State, donated a seed gift of $1.1 million to build the Trading Room. Merrill Lynch & Co. Foundation and Goldman Sachs & Co. are sponsoring the ongoing operations of the trading room. Dell Computer Corporation, Bridge Information Systems, Inc., Reuters America, Inc, Sky Technologies, Inc., and the Trade Station are among the corporate partners.
