TWO NEW JOINT DEGREE PROGRAMS AT NORTHWESTERN

EVANSTON, Ill. --- Two new joint degree programs, one designed to strengthen the science and technology background of science writers, and a second to train students in designing new computer- based educational materials, are being launched by the Robert R. McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science at Northwestern University.

The new honors program in engineering and journalism is designed to allow exceptional students to earn their BS in engineering from the McCormick School, and their master's degree from the Medill School of Journalism in five years. The two schools are among the top ranked in the country.

"We simply do not have enough journalists who have been scientifically trained," said Jon Ziomek, assistant dean for graduate editorial programs at Medill.

The joint program between the McCormick School and the School of Education and social Policy will allow students to earn their BS in engineering and their master's in education while specializing in the design of learning environments, according to Louis Gomez, associate professor of education and social policy and of computer science, and co-director of the joint program.

"This program will prepare a new generation of educators who are knowledgeable about and interested in technology and education," said Geraldine O. Garner, associate dean of the McCormick School and the other co-director of the program.

Both new joint degree programs were shepherded through the approval process by Stephen Carr, associate dean for undergraduate education at McCormick. (Dean Carr can be reached at (847) 491-7379 or be e-mail at [email protected])
