Newswise — As the United States reflects on the 64th anniversary of Japan's bombing of Pearl Harbor, a University of Missouri-Rolla military historian and an English professor emeritus can offer insight into the day that thrust the nation into World War II.

Dr. John C. McManus, assistant professor of history and political science at UMR, specializes in the American war effort during World War II. He is the author of several books, including "The Deadly Brotherhood: The American Combat Soldier in World War II" and "Deadly Sky: The American Combat Airman in World War II." He teaches courses on the Civil War, World War II, the Vietnam War, U.S. military history and the American combat experience in the 20th century.

Dr. W. Nicholas Knight, professor emeritus of English at UMR, is an expert on battle literature. Knight's experience includes a seven-week series of lectures on battle literature that covered 34 famous historical battles in 34 lectures. He is also chair of the Missouri Humanities Council.
