Newswise — Holiday gatherings with family can be a joyous occasion, or a time for tension and conflict. The key to dealing with difficult family members is planning ahead, says UAB counseling expert Michael Brooks, Ph.D. "Determine which topics will lead to arguments and avoid those subjects. Be aware of those who may drink too much, and strategically limit their alcohol intake. Also, be creative when planning family gatherings. If certain family members don't get along, try staggering visits with those family members rather than having one large gathering. Consider meeting in neutral locations such as a restaurant or banquet hall instead of someone's home. Most relatives try to hold on to family traditions, but doing away with some traditions may be in the family's best interest."
