ENRS Names Jacoby a ‘Rising Star’

PHILADELPHIA (April 5, 2019) -- Penn Nursing’s Sara Jacoby, PhD, Assistant Professor in the Department of Family and Community Health, and a Senior Fellow in both the Leonard Davis Institute for Health Economics and the Center for Public Health Initiatives, has been honored with a Rising Star Award from the Eastern Nursing Research Society (ERNS), during its 31st Annual Scientific Sessions in Providence, Rhode Island, April 3-5, 2019. This award recognizes a Junior Investigator that has shown promise in establishing a program of health and/or nursing research.

Jacoby combines nursing and public health perspectives in her approach to injury science and urban health research. As a nurse in a Philadelphia ICU, Jacoby was witness to the profound trauma and violence that impacted the lives of hospitalized patients and their families. This inspired her to study the experience of injured people and the social and structural determinants of racial and ethnic disparities in trauma outcomes.

Jacoby has been successfully developing a line of research that seeks to identify the etiologies of disparities in long-term outcomes after traumatic injury and to examine the ways that the social and built environments in urban settings shape how people recover from physical and psychological trauma. She has demonstrated an escalating record of funding including two current grants from the Rita and Alex Hillman Foundation and the University Research foundation that focus on the development and testing of a theoretically-based remote monitoring intervention to track and enhance long-term recovery after serious injury in vulnerable populations.

Jacoby is an active participant in nursing, public health, and the interdisciplinary injury science community. She co-chairs the Advocacy and Policy Committee of the Society for the Advancement of Violence and Injury Research (SAVIR) and serves as a peer reviewer for over ten scientific journals. Her research has been published in Journals that reach a wide an interdisciplinary readership including Social Science and Medicine, The International Journal of Nursing Studies, and Injury Prevention.
