Ziptronix Names New CEO

Doug Milner Moves from Invensys to Semiconductor Start-Up

Research Triangle Park, NC, January 14, 2002 -

Ziptronix, Inc., (www.ziptronix.com) a semiconductor spin-off from RTI, has named Invensys Power Systems President Doug Milner as its new chairman and chief executive. Milner will take the reins from Dale Rowe, RTI's senior vice president for new technology ventures, who has been serving as interim chairman and CEO at Ziptronix.

An October, 2000 spinout (http://www.rti.org/news/news_full.cfm?NR_ID=238&news.htm) from RTI, Ziptronix was recently voted Early Stage Company of the Year (http://www.rti.org/news/news_full.cfm?NR_ID=285) by the North Carolina Electronics and Information Technology Association and Spinout of the Year (http://www.rti.org/news/news_full.cfm?NR_ID=264) by North Carolina's Council for Entrepreneurial Development. Ziptronix' pioneering technology allows three dimensional semiconductor circuit integration through a new, non-adhesive, room temperature wafer bonding process and "backside" interconnect process. All Ziptronix processes are supported on standard semiconductor fabrication equipment.

"Ziptronix' technology has effectively broken the barrier to achieving significant, simultaneous improvements in size, cost, speed and power consumption, all through a low cost and reliable process," said Milner. "The ability to bond dissimilar materials and process wafers using standard fabrication equipment will accelerate new products to market based on Ziptronix technology."

After a stint as an engineer in General Electric's former semiconductor business in Research Triangle Park, Milner was part of a 1988 management-led buyout of a GE systems business; GESCAN International. Milner then moved on to Powerware Corporation (formerly Exide Electronics), which subsequently became the core for Invensys' Power Systems group, a global provider of engineered power systems and services to the telecommunications and IT industries.

"We are delighted that Doug decided to come on board at Ziptronix," said Victoria Franchetti Haynes, RTI's CEO. "We feel he is a perfect fit, bringing the management experience to scale the business along with the technical background to fully develop the market potential."

Ziptronix received early funding (http://www.rti.org/news/news_full.cfm?nr_id=255) in 2000 from Alliance Technology Ventures of Atlanta, Georgia and Xilinx, Inc. of San Jose, California. The company is expected to seek additional investments in the coming months.

About Ziptronix:Ziptronix is a North Carolina-based semiconductor integration company, and is a spin-off company from RTI. Ziptronix sells single chip parts comprised of die from many sources, which are integrated using a proprietary non-adhesive, room temperature bonding and interconnect process. Ziptronix parts provide a means to meet the $800B electronics product market's growing demand for more integrated, lower cost, higher performance and lower power chips.
