WEB-BASED CLINICAL DISEASE MANAGEMENT AND TREATMENT TOOLWILL HELP IMPROVE OUTCOMES AT POINT OF CARE

Clineguide, proven effective by physicians and hospital administrators, premiers at eHealthcare World

NEW YORK, NY, DECEMBER 4, 2000 - Clineguide, the only web-based clinical decision support tool that provides hospital-based physicians with point-of-care, patient-specific drug and disease treatment advice, is now available in the United States to help improve outcomes for patients. The announcement was made this morning at the eHealthcare World conference at the Javits Center in New York City.

Clineguide's evidence-based treatment guidance tailors the information provided by each patient to his or her unique characteristics and pre-existing conditions, which can help to significantly improve patient outcomes. Clineguide can also be customized by a medical facility to highlight its formulary drugs and prescribing restrictions, plus provide links to other facility-specific guidelines, policies and quality initiatives.

John Henderson, Managing Director of Clineanswers, developers of Clineguide, said "Clineguide's web design and interactive 'anticipatory care' features address the two primary causes of adverse drug reactions: lack of availability of drug information at the time of prescribing, and failure to take into account patient characteristics that influence the choice and use of drugs."

"Our experience with Clineguide has helped us improve quality of care, save time and reduce costs by providing instant access to evidence-based practice advice," said Dr. Corwin Q. Edwards, Internal Medicine Program Director at LDS Hospital, Salt Lake City, UT, where Clineguide has been undergoing beta testing since May this year. Diseases and drugs are extensively researched before content is developed.

The information within Clineguide is updated continually to include the latest guidelines and research as published in the literature. The contents of over 1,700 medical and scientific journals and all major medical meetings are monitored as part of this process. Dedicated teams of researchers - clinicians, pharmacists and clinical pharmacists - work to ensure Clineguide is the most comprehensive and up to date point-of-care clinical tool available. Research covers not only traditional medical databases but also Internet sites, including those of pharmaceutical companies, medical research organizations and regulatory bodies so that all relevant guidelines are identified before providing information through Clineguide.

"Clineguide is an excellent step in the direction of an easily useable guideline format, to be deployed in real time for real patients," said Marvin Konstam, Professor of Medicine and Chief of Cardiology at the New England Medical Center, Boston.

"The clinical accuracy of the disease content along with the flexibility and appropriateness of the navigation through the material, makes Clineguide a critical tool for patient care," said Dr. Lori B. Siegel, Chief of Rheumatology and Director of Undergraduate Medical Education, The Finch University of Health Sciences/The Chicago Medical School, following her review of the product's module for treating gout.

Clineguide's first module focuses on adult internal medicine in the acute care environment. Additional diseases and updates on information already included will be released monthly. Future versions of Clineguide will be expanded to encompass other areas of medicine including office-based practice.
