The advent of flight has forever changed the scope of civil transportation, military operations, scientific research and global commerce. From Orville and Wilbur Wright's liftoff at Kitty Hawk, in 1903, to Neil Armstrong's first steps on the moon, the past 100 years have exceeded the imagination of the human quest to fly.

In celebration of the 100th anniversary of the first flight, ASME International (American Society of Engineers) has launched a new Web site to commemorate one of the world's greatest engineering achievements, powered flight.

The Web site http://www.asme.org/event/flight provides visitors with a variety of aviation-related topics, events and learning resources. Among them, a look at the people and events that have shaped the 100-year history of flight; the explanation of aerodynamic principles -- how planes fly; educational tools for teachers and how you can get involved in public policy processes that affect the aerospace and aviation industry. Want to build a better paper airplane? The Web site can show you how to do that too.

The site will also provide information about upcoming events, including ASME's flight celebration at the 2003 ASME International Congress and RD&D Exposition, Nov. 16-21, in Washington, D.C., along with information on the ASME Aerospace Division. With regular updates and new features, http://www.asme.org/events/flight will keep you soaring with a listing of television programming for aviation enthusiasts and news from the aviation industry.

The new Web site can also be accessed via the ASME home page at www.asme.org.

ASME International is a 120,000-member organization focused on technical, educational and research issues. ASME conducts one of the world's largest technical publishing operations, holds numerous technical conferences worldwide, and offers hundreds of professional development courses each year. ASME sets internationally recognized industrial and manufacturing codes and standards that enhance public welfare and safety.
