RTI Teams with InterSurvey for Population Projectable Web-Enabled Survey Research Partnership Accelerates and Enhances Quality of RTI Research

in Health, Nutrition and the Environment on Behalf of Government, Industry

Research Triangle Park, N.C. (July 14, 2000) -- Industry and Government can expect more reliable social-analysis research data starting this fall. The teaming of RTI and InterSurvey to conduct Web-enabled surveys will mean that government and industry clients get up-to-the-minute information on vital topics such as health, nutrition, and the environment.

According to the terms of the agreement announced today, InterSurvey will become RTI's priority partner for providing Web-based research for both private industry and government clients. InterSurvey has combined the communication power of the Internet with true probability sampling to produce the first statistically valid population - projectable survey tool capable of generating reliable information for decision-making.

Announcement of the first joint research projects by RTI and InterSurvey are expected soon, according to officials with the two organizations.

"RTI built its survey reputation by being the first to make emerging technology work in the real world of research," said RTI President Victoria Franchetti Haynes, Ph.D. "We are proud that InterSurvey brought its innovative method to us, so that we can meet our clients' challenging needs for valid information."

"This alliance is a natural," said Douglas Rivers, InterSurvey CEO. "RTI is one of the nation's leaders in providing research that profoundly influences decisions in areas such as health, transportation, and the environment. Our partnership will improve the timeliness and quality of RTI data, and give policy makers better information that ultimately could result in better public policies."

"InterSurvey represents a completely new research tool that has enormous potential to change the landscape of survey research," said Judith Lessler, Ph.D., RTI's director of Statistical Research and a Fellow of the American Statistical Association. "One of the most exciting aspects is the capability to integrate multimedia material with the questionnaire. The interactive Web devices have been upgraded to receive and store multimedia questionnaires overnight, so the respondent does not have to wait for Internet traffic."

InterSurvey is the first and only company to combine the communications power of the Internet with reliable sampling techniques. Since mid 1999, the company has recruited and maintained a national panel of households selected by the well-accepted techniques of stratified random-digit-dial telephone probability sampling. With approximately 95,000 panelists recruited to date, the panel is projected to reach 250,000 by the first quarter of 2001.

Each household receives at no charge an interactive Web device and Internet access.

Web-enabled research is the latest example of RTI's leadership in pioneering technology for challenging, statistically valid studies. For example, RTI was the first to implement audio computer-assisted self-interviewing in national surveys such as the National Survey of Family Growth and the National Household Survey on Drug Abuse.
