Newswise — On Oct. 6, 2009, the Whitman School of Management at Syracuse University will host the 60th anniversary of the Harry E. Salzberg Memorial Program, an annual celebration of achievements in supply chain management. This year’s recipient of the Salzberg Medallion for Outstanding Practitioner is Michael J. Ward, chairman and CEO of CSX Corporation, a leading North American transportation company providing rail, intermodal and rail-to-truck transload services.

The 60th anniversary Salzberg Memorial program begins at 1 p.m. in the Lender Auditorium, located on the concourse level of the Whitman School building. In addition to the presentation of the Salzberg medallion, the program will include panel discussions on “Global Railroading” and “Transportation Infrastructure.”

”I am honored to be recognized by the distinguished Whitman School of Management on behalf of CSX employees everywhere,” says Ward. “This is an exciting time to be a railroader with increasing public acknowledgment of the economic and environmental solutions that railroads provide to our country, as well as the tremendous value we bring to our customers and shareholders.”

Ward was named chairman and CEO in 2003. Over his 31-year career, he has headed the company’s operations, coal sales and marketing, and finance departments. Under his leadership, the CSX achieved its safest year and its highest customer service ranking in 2008. Ward was also named Railway Age magazine’s Railroader of the Year for 2008. He holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Maryland, and earned a MBA from the Harvard Business School. He serves on the boards of the Association of American Railroads, Ashland Inc., the Center for Energy and Economic Development, City Year, United Way of Northeast Florida, and Hubbard House. His other business affiliations include The Florida Council of 100 and The Business Roundtable.

“Each year, the Whitman School is honored to present an eminent person from the field of supply chain with the Salzberg Medallion,” says Melvin T. Stith, dean of the Whitman School of Management. “This year, we celebrate the 60th anniversary of this fine program, and we are pleased to honor the chairman and CEO of a quintessential transportation company—one of the backbones of supply chain management. Certainly, Whitman students interested in supply chain are fortunate to have the opportunity to network with the professionals we bring in for the program and to learn from their successes.”

The event is free and open to the public. Paid parking is available at the University Avenue Garage.
