WOOD COMPOSITES CENTER GRAND OPENING

ORONO, Maine -- The Advanced Engineered Wood Composites Center (AEWC) at the University of Maine will celebrate its leadership in developing new wood-based composite technologies with a grand opening June 1. Such technologies will be needed to meet the construction demands of a growing global population.

Media representatives are welcome to cover the event which will begin at 10 a.m. with a formal ribbon cutting ceremony and conclude at noon. Tours of the facility and technology demonstrations will follow.

Additional tours for the general public are scheduled for June 2 and 3 between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. each day.

The AEWC is the nation's largest laboratory for the design, fabrication and testing of new wood composite structural materials under one roof. Faculty associated with the center are also affiliated with academic departments in engineering, forestry and business. The $8 million facility was constructed with financial support from the wood products industry, federal and state agencies and private foundations.
