The Academy for Eating Disorders announces its annual International Conference on Eating Disorders, taking place March 14 - 16, 2019 in New York, NY
Newswise — Reston, VA, February 26, 2019 - “Start Spreading the News: Education, Dissemination, and the Science of Eating Disorders,” is the theme of the upcoming International Conference on Eating Disorders (ICED), which will be held in New York, NY (conference co-chairs: Ross Crosby, Ph.D. and Kelsie Forbush, Ph.D.) The ICED brings together a diverse set of professionals from the fields of mental health, nutrition, medicine, epidemiology, social justice advocacy, and public policy from across the globe together to improve the lives of people with eating disorders.
The 2019 ICED keynote address, “Why People Die by Suicide,” will be given by Dr. Thomas Joiner, Jr. Dr. Joiner developed a new theory that has applications across diverse forms of mental illness, including eating disorders. Dr. Joiner proposes that three issues are critical in predicting who might be at highest risk for death by suicide, including: feeling like a burden to loved ones; feeling isolated; and the learned ability to hurt oneself. The keynote lecture will elucidate his theory and draw from clinical anecdotes, history, literature, popular culture, anthropology, epidemiology, genetics and neurobiology. Dr. Joiner will discuss how his theory explains suicide rates among men and women; white and African-American men; individuals with anorexia nervosa, athletes, sex workers, and physicians; members of cults, sports fans, and citizens of nations in crisis. His talk will also cover new approaches to suicide risk assessment, development in treatment of suicidal behavior, and development in suicide prevention.
In addition to the keynote address by Dr. Thomas Joiner, the conference will feature four exciting plenary sessions that will discuss diverse topics including: Short-Term Treatments for Eating Disorders; Eating Disorders in the LGBTQ+ Community; Compulsory Treatment for Eating Disorders; and Experimental Neurobiological Therapeutics for Eating Disorders.
Additional opportunities at the 2019 ICED include a Clinical Teaching Day that will feature the latest innovations and developments in treatment and research; clinical training workshops; hundreds of paper and poster sessions on the latest research innovations; a research-practice think tank; and much more.
