Newswise — Pediatric dentist Erik Scheifele, DMD, says that parents often spread cavity-causing bacteria by kissing or sharing utensils with their children.

"Cavities are an infectious disease. Parents must have regular dental check-ups to make sure that their mouths are not a hazard to their kid's."

Scheifele also offers the following tips for good oral health in children.

* Begin brushing your child's teeth as soon as they come in, using either a soft cloth or brush.

* Kids who participate in sports should use the appropriate protective safety equipment including mouth guards to avoid tooth loss.

* Limit your child's soda, sports drink and candy consumption.

Dr. Scheifele, Director of Pediatric Dentistry at Temple University School of Dentistry, has also worked with pregnant women, new mothers and children in medically underserved communities on oral health care.
