Newswise — (ROCHESTER, Minnesota, Oct. 30, 2018) – The American Association of Neuromuscular & Electrodiagnostic Medicine (AANEM) is pleased to announce the selection of Anthony E. Chiodo, MD, MBA, as President of the Board of Directors for 2018-2019. He succeeds Eric J. Sorenson, MD, whose term ended on October 13, 2018.
“As President, I look forward to building on the successes of the AANEM in the areas of research, quality education, and advocacy,” said Dr. Chiodo.
Out of all of the initiatives driven by the AANEM, Dr. Chiodo is a firm believer in AANEM’s commitment to research in the field of neuromuscular and electrodiagnostic medicine.
“New knowledge is the lifeblood of our work and being part of that research drive makes us a more important and vital organization,” he said.
In addition to research, Dr. Chiodo believes the membership of the AANEM and the collaboration that occurs between AANEM members are some of the organization’s finest strengths.
“I enjoy my work and interactions with all of the great physicians, researchers, and technologists at AANEM,” he said. “We all bring something different to the organization, and at the end of the day, it makes the organization better. I learn and gain so much from our interactions together.”
Membership in AANEM has resulted in numerous benefits for Dr. Chiodo.
“Because of my involvement in AANEM, I have developed several relationships with physicians around the country and have met many great friends. These personal relationships are very important to me,” Dr. Chiodo explained. “Being a part of AANEM has also provided me with excellent leadership opportunities.”
Dr. Chiodo’s plenary topic for the 2019 AANEM Annual Meeting will be focused on the present and future role of technology in the lives of patients with neuromuscular diseases. As Dr. Chiodo explained, “Technological advances are happening very quickly and are quite impressive in areas such as robotics, computerization, and mobility aids. We, as neuromuscular physicians, need to know what tools we can use to benefit our patients. I believe that by covering this important topic at our 2019 meeting, we will be able to better serve our patients because we will be able to educate them about these technologies and advocate for them to receive these technologies, if needed.”
Dr. Chiodo is looking forward to seeing everyone at the 2019 AANEM Annual Meeting in Austin, Texas.
“I love seeing what different AANEM presidents bring forward as their plenary topic for the annual meeting,” said Shirlyn A. Adkins, JD, AANEM Executive Director. “Dr. Chiodo’s is relevant to what is happening today. Technology is changing our world. I look forward to helping him achieve his plenary vision for 2019.”
Dr. Chiodo is Professor and Associate Chair in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the University of Michigan Health System in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He also serves as Medical Director of Spinal Cord Injury Medicine and Medical Director of the Spine Program. His academic areas of interest include anatomic localization in electromyography, clinical electromyography, spinal cord injury, and spine pain. He is board-certified in pain medicine and spinal cord injury medicine.
Dr. Chiodo has been a member of AANEM since 1988. He previously served on the AANEM Board of Directors from 2009-2012 and as Secretary/Treasurer from 2014-2017. He also volunteered on several AANEM committees as a member or chairperson between 2002 and 2014.
