Newswise — STONY BROOK, NY, July 12, 2019 -- On July 20 at the Avram Theater at Stony Brook Southampton, Stony Brook University planetary scientist, Timothy Glotch, engineers who worked on the first lunar module, and a producer of the new documentary film “Apollo 11” will come together to discuss the historic event of the first Moon landing – on the exact day of the 50th anniversary.

Sponsored by Stony Brook University through the Office of the Vice President for Research and the Montauk Observatory, the event is open to the public and runs from 1 PM to 6 PM.

The event features:  A screening of Apollo 11, along with a Q and A with one of its producers, Ben Feist; a roundtable discussion with Grumman engineers who worked on the mission, and their behind-the-scenes recollections of the creation of the lunar module at Grumman; and a lecture by Timothy Glotch, Professor of Geosciences, titled “50 Years of Lunar Science: What We Learned from and Since Apollo 11.”

“My talk will describe the advances that we have made in our understanding of the Moon in the 50 years since the Apollo 11 astronauts successfully landed on the lunar surface and returned safely to earth, “ says Glotch. “The Apollo missions provided a wealth of scientific information about the Moon from remote observations, samples collected, and experiments left on the lunar surface.”

There will also be displays from the Moon landing era, and scientific discussions about what we have learned since the first Moon landing and what the future holds for future space exploration – including Glotch’s discussion about a return of humans to the Moon and what it would take for a long-term sustainable presence on it.

Professor Glotch is available for interviews leading up to and at the event. Please contact Gregory Filiano at 631-444-9343 or [email protected] to schedule.
