Newswise — The American College of Sports Medicine is pleased to announce that Arthur S. Leon, M.D., FACSM, has been named the recipient of its 2016 Honor Award. Dr. Leon was selected for this award to recognize his outstanding achievements in the field of sports medicine. He was recognized at an awards banquet during the association’s recent annual meeting.

“The ACSM Honor Award is granted each year to an individual with a distinguished career of outstanding scientific and scholarly contributions to sports medicine and/or the exercise sciences,” said Elizabeth Joy, president of ACSM. “We’re happy to recognize Dr. Leon’s tremendous accomplishments.”

Dr. Leon received his bachelor’s from University of Florida in 1952 and his master’s and medical degree from University of Wisconsin-Madison. He has been a professor at the University of Minneapolis since 1973 and the Henry L. Taylor Professor in the School of Kinesiology since 1992. Dr. Taylor was Leon’s mentor and also an ACSM Honor Award recipient. He served as a medical officer in the U.S. Army from 1961-67 in Europe and at Walter Reed Army Medical Center.

Leon’s area of practice is internal medicine and cardiology, and he is internationally recognized for his research on the role of physical activity for prevention of cardiovascular disease. He has published more than 350 scholarly publications, including the MRFIT Study published in JAMA in 1987, which was instrumental in developing the national physical activity guidelines for Americans. Dr. Leon has been an ACSM Fellow since 1970 and an ACSM certified program director since 1975. He received an ACSM citation award in 1995.
