Newswise — The American Society of Nephrology (ASN) has elected Bruce A. Molitoris, MD, FASN as its new president. Dr. Molitoris starts his term as president November 4, 2012.

“Nephrology is experiencing a tremendous birth of excitement and interest, and our members will face unbelievable opportunities to improve patient care and halt the progression of kidney disease,” said Dr. Molitoris.

Dr. Molitoris noted several priorities for ASN in 2013, including:

- Insuring the successful launch of the Kidney Health Initiative (KHI), a partnership between ASN and the FDA that will foster new therapeutic options for patients with kidney disease.- Advancing patient care through research, building on the phenomenal early success of the ASN Foundation for Kidney Research to continue to promote extraordinary advances in medical research.- Increasing disease prevention by broadening understanding of risk factors and kidney health among professionals, patients and the public.- Encouraging kidney professionals to focus more effort on sharing with young people the excitement of working in a field that covers such compelling interests and makes such a positive difference in patients’ lives.- Advocating for advances in patient safety, quality and deliver of care and extending ASN’s role as a leading voice worldwide in improving all aspects of kidney care.

Under the leadership of Dr. Molitoris, ASN will promote cures for kidney disease by training the next generation of kidney professionals, encouraging research innovations, and advocating for the highest quality care for patients.

Dr. Molitoris is Professor of Medicine and Director of the Indiana Center for Biological Microscopy. His research interests include acute kidney injury from ischemia, sepsis and nephrotoxins, the utilization of photon microscopy to study in vivo cellular and subcellular processes, and understanding kidney disease and disease therapies.
