Newswise — Dr. Mark Oberle and his family had just arrived at a hotel off Patong Beach on Phuket Island, Thailand, about 7 hours before the tsunami struck. Instead of the brief diving vacation Oberle, his wife Mardie and son William anticipated, they went into action, providing first aid and triage for tsunami survivors who were able to make it to their hotel and two others nearby.

Oberle's journal and photos he took on Phuket are on his University of Washington Website, at http://faculty.washington.edu/moberle/Tsunami/Tsunami.htm

Oberle, who holds a medical degree and a master's in public health, is associate dean of the UW School of Public Health and Community Medicine and professor of epidemiology and of health services, and has a joint appointment with the School of Medicine. He is a noted expert on bioterrorism surveillance, especially on detection, information gathering, analysis, and dissemination, as well as public health responses, and the development of systems to respond to bioterrorism emergencies, including collaborations among state, local and community agencies.
