Recognizing Breast Cancer Awareness Month: Rutgers Breast Cancer Experts Available to Discuss Updates in Research and Practice

October is breast cancer awareness month, and according to Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey, breast cancer is the most common type of cancer among women in the United States and remains the second leading cause of cancer deaths in American women.

As New Jersey’s only National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center, Rutgers Cancer Institute has breast cancer experts available to discuss recent research findings and the latest news surrounding the prevalence, detection and treatment of the disease.

“The importance of breast cancer awareness month is manifold,” says Nancy Chan, medical oncologist in the Stacy Goldstein Breast Cancer Center at Rutgers Cancer Institute.  “We continue to highlight the importance of screening because we know early detection leads to better outcomes. We also need to battle the stigma surrounding breast cancer diagnoses that still prevails in some women, by empowering women to not be afraid of seeking medical attention when they notice something is wrong.”

According to Chan, there have been major advances in the treatment of breast cancer that benefit patients across the board, made possible through the time and resources dedicated to research. “The goal of breast cancer research is to continually improve upon the current standard treatments and we must continue to push forward in this front.”
