Call the Bone Phone

Too many people are unaware of the risk factors and consequences of osteoporosis, says UAB registered dietitian Beth Kitchin, M.S., R.D.

"We think of it as an inevitable consequence of aging, but many young people, particularly those at high risk, can take action to prevent or slow down the onset of the disease."

More than 25 million Americans have osteoporosis, with medical costs of over $10 billion a year in the United States. To help educate the public, UAB and the Alabama Department of Public Health have established a toll-free telephone hot line to answer the public's questions about osteoporosis. The Alabama Tone Your Bones hot line number is 1-888-934-BONE.
