LAS VEGAS -- Nuclear waste disposal, risks from food impurities and potential flu treatments are among the topics that will be discussed at the 214th American Chemical Society national meeting here September 7-11.

Approximately 10,000 registrants are expected to gather for about 400 technical sessions to be held in the Las Vegas Convention Center, the Las Vegas Hilton, and the Stardust hotel. Approximately 4,800 papers will be presented.

Selected symposia and topics of special interest include:

filth in food: regulation and risk assessment

flu inhibitors

safety lessons from landmark disasters

nuclear waste disposal, including environmental programs in Nevada

scientific ethics

mining, minerals and the environment

fuel toxicology

practical pollution prevention

dental materials and composites

self-assembling materials

During the meeting, American Chemical Society president Dr. Paul Anderson and a panel of other distinguished scientists will discuss strategies for success for today's young chemists, who will come of age in 2020. The event is organized by the Society's Younger Chemists Committee and cosponsored by the Division of Professional Relations.

Anderson will also participate in the Women Chemists Committee 70th Anniversary Celebration, which will highlight the accomplishments and contributions of women in chemistry over the past 70 years. Dr. Mary Good, recently retired Under Secretary for Technology of the Commerce Department, will discuss how scientific accomplishments to-date will lead women to future scientific successes in the 21st century.

A chemistry exposition featuring approximately 270 companies will be open to the public (free to meeting registrants; $25 for non-registrants) in the convention center's south exhibit hall. Hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday (Sept. 8) and Tuesday (Sept. 9), and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday (Sept. 10). Displays will include instruments, books, computer hardware and scientific software, and laboratory and safety equipment. # # # #
