Coping with Cancer On Line

UAB psychologists are working on a study, Project Survive, on how the Internet can be used to improve breast cancer patients' quality of life. Breast cancer patients often turn to support groups to cope. But studies indicate that psychological interventions that address patients' emotional changes and provide coping strategies are more effective than traditional support groups. "The field of psycho-oncology has become an important [area] of study for research and clinical services," says Jason Owen, the project's principal investigator.

Researchers created a Web site, http://health.psy.uab.edu/survive, where patients can share their personal experiences with each other online and get information on how to cope with specific physical and emotional symptoms and side effects associated with cancer and its treatment.
