Newswise — ROCHESTER, Minn. — To meet growing patient demand, Mayo Clinic is expanding its destination medical centers in Rochester; Jacksonville, Florida; and Phoenix. The nearly $1 billion investment will enable Mayo to help more patients with serious, complex and rare conditions, and continue to accommodate the research, education and technologies that improve and save lives.

An 11-floor expansion of the Gonda Building will provide an additional 200,000 square feet of clinical space across four new floors to accommodate current patients and support the next generation of growth. Mayo plans to use the additional patient care space for the Mayo Clinic Cancer Center and Outpatient Procedure Center. Plans for this development are being finalized.
The remaining seven floors will be developed for a premier hotel space by Pontiac Land Group under a joint venture with Mayo Clinic. Through this collaboration, the joint venture will own the hotel, which will be operated by a major hotel group to be identified and announced at a later date.
Construction is slated to begin by the end of 2019 or early 2020, with the project being completed by the end of 2022. The plans will make the expanded Gonda Building the tallest building in Rochester at 490 feet.
A five-floor, 120,000-square-feet addition is planned on Mayo Clinic's Florida campus. This addition will have space for up to eight operating rooms, as well as procedural space for Cardiovascular Medicine, Gastroenterology and Hepatology, as well as other departments. The additional clinical space is slated for completion in 2021.
The expansion also will include a 1,000-space patient parking garage. The garage is expected to be completed in 2020.
An additional 1.4 million square feet of building space will accommodate new patient rooms, clinic and rehab space, and an outpatient surgical center. This space also will expand the Emergency Department, Laboratory Medicine, Radiology and Pharmacy. The initial areas are projected to open as early as June 2020, with the final phase opening in April 2023.
The five-year expansion project also includes a 1,000-space patient parking garage and 1,600-space, multilevel staff parking.
