Don't Party At Office Celebration

Don't confuse an office holiday celebration with a "party," says management professor Susan Key, Ph.D. "The ability to interact in social situations is a consideration for promotion. Use this time to network. Be seen as someone with personality. Your CEO and others will be watching." Her advice: enjoy a drink, but don't get drunk; talk to the executives, who often don't know employees outside their daily routine. For women, she advises wearing appropriate holiday attire, not your usual business suit. "Show you can be socially appropriate. And unfortunately, be aware that male co-workers can see the relaxed atmosphere as an opportunity to make advances. Taking an escort can help avoid the problem."
