When people write business correspondence, they focus on making sure spelling and grammar are correct.

But what about the way a phone number is written? Could it make a difference in the way people perceive you -- trendy or traditional -- if you use (555) 555-5555 instead of the more modern 555.555.5555? Not likely, says UAB management professor George Munchus, Ph.D.

"I believe (205) 555-5555 is the proper way to include a phone number in any type of business correspondence. Humans are always creating new ways of conducting business. Changing the way you write a phone number is a subtle way of doing this. It probably won't make a difference to the letter's recipient."
