Newswise — As the fall semester begins, experts at Texas Tech University can provide advice on how to keep students from wrecking their credit, or their lives, through credit cards or alcohol and drug abuse.

Kitty Harris, director of Texas Tech University’s Center for the Study of Addiction and Recovery (CSAR), can discuss issues related to student drinking and drug abuse.

Harris has worked with hundreds of students in recovery for drug and alcohol addictions.

CSAR is one of the oldest and largest programs of its kind for the nation, and has become the model for similar programs at schools such as Vanderbilt University, The University of Mississippi and the University of Texas at Austin.

The center’s students maintain a 3.34 GPA and 80 percent graduation rate, and only 7 percent have suffered relapses.

Using data gleaned through CSAR, Harris recently co-authored the book “Substance Abuse Recovery in College,” published by Springer.

Harris can be reached at (806) 742-2891, or [email protected].

Dottie Durband, director of Texas Tech’s Red to Black credit counseling program can provide tips to help college students keep their checkbooks balanced while avoiding credit card debt.

Administered through Texas Tech’s Personal Financial Planning Division, Red to Black provides free counseling for university students on issues like establishing credit, creating a budget, saving money, investing, repaying debt and organizing finances.

Durband can be reached at (806) 742-5050 ext. 234 or [email protected]
