Newswise — The Human Health Foundation (http://www.hhfonlus.org/), a nonprofit organization founded in 2006 to develop and fund biomedical research in Italy, will open the Terni Human Health Bioscience Institute for the investigation of breast, brain and lung cancer on June 7th in Terni, Italy.

Leading the dedication ceremony will be the co-founders of the HHF, Antonio Giordano, MD, PhD, the President and Founder of the Sbarro Health Research Organization Center for Biotechnology Research (http://www.shro.org) located at Temple University in Philadelphia, PA and Giovannino Antonini, the President of the Banca di Popolare di Spoleto in Spoleto, Italy. Dr. Giordano also serves as the President of the Scientific Board for HHF.

“Our challenge is to fill the gap between the levels of health and science research located in the north of Italy with those of the central and southern areas,” said Dr. Giordano. “Our goal is to provide new job opportunities for young researchers while building on our fruitful collaborations with academic organizations throughout Italy, including the University of Naples, the University of Genoa, and the University of Roma La Sapienza.”

“My thanks go to President Antonini, who from day one believed in this project.”

Along with developing new medical research centers, HHF promotes and supports novel methods for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes and other illnesses; implements and designs new initiatives to exchange and spread the results of new research; and designs original programs to inform and increase public awareness of health and ethical issues that involve scientific research and cancer prevention.

Speakers at the dedication ceremony will include: Leopoldo Di Girolamo, the Mayor of Terni; Eros Brega, President of Consiglio regionale Umbria; Bishop Vincenzo Paglia, Bishop of the Diocese of Terni, Narni, and Amelia; Catiuscia Marini, President of the Umbria Region; Giuseppe Pizza, Secretary of State for Education, University and Scientific Research; and Ignazio Marino, President of Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry on the effectiveness and efficiency of the NHS.

Sbarro Health Research Organization Center for Biotechnology Research funds the Sbarro Institute for Cancer Research and Molecular Medicine, a leading nonprofit research center for cancer, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. Based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in the College of Science and Technology at Temple University, our programs train young scientists from around the globe.
