Physicians, researchers and international experts will present the latest research and treatments in asthma, other allergic diseases and immunologic disorders -- conditions that afflict more than 50 million Americans.

Entitled First, the Patient, the meeting focuses on topics in the forefront of the specialty, including:

-- Updates on bioterrorism and vaccines-- Health effects, assessment and legal aspects of environmental mold exposure, including mold in schools-- Ethical issues in clinical research and protecting human subjects-- A global look at gene environment interactions; bacterial and viral infections; antiviral agents; and probiotics in allergic disease-- An overview of emerging therapies and alternatives to conventional immunotherapy-- Mechanisms and management of anaphylaxis-- New developments in the management of allergic rhinitis and the link to asthma and sinusitis-- Latest research in asthma disease management and early intervention in persistent asthma-- Strategies for treating atopic dermatitis, urticaria and immunologic skin disease-- Controversies in sinusitis and management of sinus headache-- Advances in management of allergic eye disease and research of ocular allergy agents

The Annual Meeting program consists of nearly 100 scientific sessions, 45 workshops, some 350 technical exhibits and more than 250 abstract presentations.

The ACAAI Annual Meeting is preceded by an international conference, Complementary Alternative Medicine -- Allergy, Asthma and Immunology, on Nov. 14. The one-day conference includes:

-- Scientific focus is in allergy and asthma on epidemiology of CAM, behavioral intervention, herbal and dietary supplements, and mechanical intervention-- Keynote speaker is Stephen E. Straus, M.D., director of the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, National Institute of Health

More than 4,000 total meeting participants include some 1,800 physicians, 200 allied health professionals, 100 office managers and 1,200 pharmaceutical representatives.

The ACAAI is a professional medical organization headquartered in Arlington Heights, Ill., comprised of 4,200 qualified allergists-immunologists and related health care professionals.
