Newswise — The American College of Sports Medicine is pleased to announce that Francis G. O’Connor, M.D., FACSM, is a recipient of its 2016 Citation Award. Dr. O’Connor was selected for this award because of his significant contributions to sports medicine and the exercise sciences. He was recognized at an awards banquet during the association’s annual meeting.

“Citation Award winners are selected for their leadership and contributions in the areas of research and scholarship, clinical care, administrative services or educational services,” said Liz Joy, president of ACSM. “We’re happy to recognize Dr. O’Connor’s tremendous accomplishments.”

Dr. O’Connor is professor and chair of the Department of Military and Emergency Medicine and associate director of the Uniformed Services University Consortium for Health and Military Performance in Bethesda, Maryland. After completing his undergraduate degree at the United States Military Academy at West Point, Dr. O’Connor attended medical school at the State University of New York in Syracuse. Dr. O’Connor has been the acknowledged leader of primary care sports medicine in the United States Army and directed the highly successful primary care sports medicine fellowship at the Uniformed Services University from 1997 until 2004.

Dr. O’Connor is considered a world authority on the clinical management of heat stroke and exertional rhabdomyolysis, due in part to his seminal work on preventing and treating these issues in Army soldiers. He has also established himself as a respected national leader in the field, serving on both the AMSSM and ACSM Board of Trustees and as AMSSM President in 2010-2011.

Dr. O’Connor’s Citation Award was one of six that were given this year. Other recipients include:
