Get Kids Moving

A recent U.S. Surgeon General's report says 13 percent of children and teens in the United States are overweight or obese. Along with having poor eating habits, children today are more sedentary, spending their free time watching television or playing video games instead of playing outside. Parents can turn everyday activities into opportunities to get children more physically active, says UAB physical education expert Terry Conkle, Ed.D. "If you have to wash and wax the car, get the kids outside to help you. Let them push their little brother or sister in the stroller around the mall. Chores like gardening, sweeping or taking a walk at the zoo are also helpful." But, he says, parents should be good role models and get active too.
