Newswise — Kathryn L. Kotula, Senior Investigative Food Scientist at Investigative Food Sciences, has been selected as the winner of the 2009 Carl R. Fellers Award by the Institute of Food Technologists (IFT), a nonprofit international society with 20,000 members working in food science, technology and related professions.
The Carl R. Fellers Award was created to honor a member of IFT and Phi Tau Sigma who has brought honor and recognition to the profession of food science and technology through a distinguished career in that profession displaying exemplary leadership, service and communication skills that enhance the effectiveness of all food scientists in serving society. The award will be presented at IFT's Annual Meeting and Food Expo in Anaheim, CA on June 6th 2009, and includes $3,000 honorarium from Phi Tau Sigma and a plaque from IFT.
Kotula has created her own consultancy, Investigative Food Sciences, through which she advises companies involved in litigation and arbitration cases centered on food borne illness outbreaks and product spoilage. Her science-based investigations and advice have provided an extremely valuable service to food producers and processors, and have allowed them to successfully defend lawsuits against them, and protect their reputations. She also serves as a processing authority in matters of regulatory compliance and processing innovations.
IFT recognizes the many accomplishments that individuals and organizations have made to advance the food science industry and to help ensure safe, affordable, and nutritious foods to the world.
