Newswise — Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, a part of Wolters Kluwer Health, a leading provider of information and business intelligence for students, professionals, and institutions in medicine, nursing, allied health, pharmacy, and the pharmaceutical industry, today announced major increases in journal impact factors across its portfolio.

According to the 2008 Journal Citation Reports© (JCR) published by ThomsonReuters, over 64% of 153 ranked LWW journals increased their impact factor. Impact factor is a measurement of the frequency with which peer-reviewed journals are cited by other researchers.

"We are very proud of the 2008 impact factors and rankings for LWW journals and especially happy with the increases over 2007. LWW's mission is to publish the industry's most highly cited, authoritative medical journal literature for our valued customers, subscribers, and society partners; and a measure of our ability to always deliver high-quality content is the continued rise in impact factors across our journal offerings," commented Karen Abramson, President & CEO of Wolters Kluwer Health Medical Research, which is comprised of the journals division of Lippincott Williams & Wilkins as well as Ovid Technologies.

In Key Subject Categories, LWW Holds Sway

Notable showings include the journal Circulation, which increased its impact factor 14% to 14.595. Circulation continues to hold the #1 spot in the categories of Peripheral Vascular Disease, Hematology, and Cardiac and Cardiovascular Systems, for both impact factor and total cites. LWW dominates the Peripheral Vascular Disease category, publishing all of the top five—and seven of the top ten—journals including Circulation; Circulation Research; Hypertension; Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis, and Vascular Biology; Current Opinion in Lipidology; Stroke; and Journal of Hypertension.

Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine are two other subject areas in which LWW leads the pack. LWW claims 5 of the top 10 titles in Anesthesiology (Anesthesiology, The Clinical Journal of Pain, Anesthesia & Analgesia, Journal of Neurosurgical Anesthesiology, and Regional Anesthesia & Pain Medicine,) and 5 of the top 10 in Critical Care Medicine (Critical Care Medicine, Shock, Current Opinion in Critical Care, The Journal of Trauma, and Pediatric Critical Care Medicine.)

LWW is also the publisher of highly ranked journals including Annals of Surgery (#1 in Surgery, impact factor 8.46,) and Obstetrics & Gynecology (#2 in Obstetrics & Gynecology.) In Clinical Neurology, LWW's Neurology® is the top-cited journal for the eighth year in a row, rising from #5 to #4 in impact factor. Transplantation is most-cited in the Transplantation category.

Some Strong Debuts

Seven LWW journals achieved JCR ranking for the first time this year, and some garnered high positions on the list. Current Opinion in Ophthalmology entered the rankings at #8 in Ophthalmology. Journal of Cardiovascular Nursing achieved the #9 spot in Nursing. And Pediatric Critical Care Medicine was ranked #10 in Critical Care.
