Newswise — The University of Michigan Medical School now ranks No. 7 among the nation's 125 accredited medical schools, according to the annual "Best Graduate Schools" rankings released today by U.S. News & World Report.

The U-M Medical School's seventh-place finish continues its steady advance in the magazine's rankings from 12th in 2000, to 10th in 2001 and 8th the last two years. Only one other medical school affiliated with a public university placed higher than U-M.

U.S. News & World Report also placed the Medical School in the Top 10 for four medical specialties, including family medicine (No. 5), geriatrics (No. 5), internal medicine (No. 8) and women's health (No. 5).

"I'm delighted that we continue to move up in the rankings. This national recognition reflects the enduring value of the Michigan identity, and the Michigan difference experienced by our students, graduate students and 19,000 Medical School alumni," says Allen S. Lichter, M.D., dean of the U-M Medical School. "As always, our faculty continues to excel in providing the finest in medical education, patient care and scientific research."

Among separate rankings of primary care-oriented medical and osteopathic schools, the U-M ranked No. 23, as compared to last year's 22nd-place finish.

U.S. News & World Report rankings are based on two types of data: expert opinion about program quality and statistical indicators that measure the quality of a school's faculty, research, and students.

Last year, the U-M Medical School selected 170 first-year medical students from 4,767 applicants. The school's total enrollment was 673 medical students and 811 graduate students and fellows. In 2003, according to data released by U.S. News & World Report, U-M Medical School faculty received $287 million in research grant awards from the National Institutes of Health.

U.S. News & World Report's complete rankings of graduate schools for the 2004-2005 academic year will be published in a special book, America's Best Graduate Schools, available April 5. Many of the ranking categories will also appear in the April 12 edition of U.S. News & World Report. Results also are available online at http://www.usnews.com.
